I first heard of Saritah a few years back from a close friend/venue owner who was well-known for his generosity towards touring acts. Every time Saritah came here from Australia, however, I was on the road but we connected on the old Facebook and had each other’s albums from Tim Cadillac. We almost weren’t going to be able to meet this time either but I managed to slip in a show between my live music video trip with Finding the Nature to Tofino and my annual pilgrimage to Oregon Country Fair. So we shall be finally meeting and sharing music, and if you happen to be in Vancouver you absolutely must come to the Media Club next Wednesday July 9th!!! https://www.facebook.com/events/690176187698288/

This Friday we’re hosting a private event with live music, dj’s and workshops with funds raised to go towards Dogwood Initiative’s work to protect our coast again the Tarsands pipelines. It will be a coming together of the community to battle the corporacratic regime that dominates Canada.

This weekend, me and the producer & director of Finding the Nature went on a location scouting adventure to the west coast of Vancouver Island. We’ve won a grant to shoot a 10minute live music video out in nature from Telus. The songs we’re going to shoot in July are Stubborn Man and Stars Over Tokyo from my Crow’s Nest e.p.. The first is about the state of democracy in Canada and the predominance of a Corpocratic system that attacks civil liberties, the environment and First Nations’ rights. The second about Fukushima and seeing the stars at night. We are going to make a beautiful video with my band somewhere wild to fill people with wonder, joy, and a desire to immerse themselves in nature. That’s our plan!!

This past weekend was gorgeous. Straight up beautiful & soulgasmic. I was in Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island for an evening of film, music and art at the Clayoquot Theatre. The film REACTOR by Ian Mackenzie premiered and my song Stars Over Tokyo is in it. Rika Heywood also had showing of his Oceanscape driftwood framed art. I surfed and felt my atoms recharged with awesome. There’s also an exciting prospect to get involved with a music initiative with native youth in the area, too. Very stoked about that!

The next stop was Salt Spring Island for a fundraising house concert for Syd Woodward’s organic farm documentary initiative Over Grow the System. He is also an incredible film maker, and he is doing great work supporting the movement towards sustainable local back-to-the land agriculture. We drank the best micro-brew beer ever at Salt Spring Island Ales and incredibly delectable goat cheese from Salt Spring Island Cheese. Came back yesterday so refreshed and energized for life.

Songs begin as ideas, parts of a melody, usually with an ukelele or beach guitar. The band plays it on the road and people dance or cry if it’s any good! Now we’re at the recording phase and going for the most organic classic warm sound we can, with a few modern surprises here and there. I am living some of my favorite moments right now and will share the sonic results of them with you soon. Bless Up!!

This Sunday afternoon we’re working on the last 2 songs being produced by Jason Kechely. This is Chris Gestrin, keyboard wizard, he’ll be bringing the magic sauce for Red Moon and False Flags. I wrote these on piano, and am so excited to hear them played by a real player. Wait to hear him shred on this Hammond Organ!!! (at Afterlife Studios)

Second Day of recording. Second song down, Carnival Ride. This tune is about our addiction to oil and the battle’s being fought against pipelines here at home and across the world. Still, you gotsta keep it groovy. This sexy protest music. (at Afterlife Studios)

First things first. Load and set up the drums, this always takes a big chunk of the initial day. John Raham’s studio is like stepping back in time, with vintage preamps and boards, old pianos and keyboards. Sam Cartwright is calm and collected, ready to get the drums sounding fat and tight. I’m on a coffee and snacks run, the mood is light & Jason Kechely and I are having laugh sharing bad jokes and listening to Beck’s new record in the car. Rest of the band will be showing up in the next hour or so.. (at Afterlife Studios)
